WHAT IS A BICIBUS?

" Bici" is the Spanish word for bicycle or bicycles.

The "bus" stands for the so-called association under traffic law, which 16 or more cyclists can form spontaneously or planned according to the StVO.

The BiciBus is similar to a connected vehicle (truck with trailer).

Driving next to each other is not only allowed, but even encouraged to make better use of the traffic area.

In this way, the BiciBus can take up a complete lane of the road in accordance with the rules. Vehicles that want to overtake the convoy must at least take the next lane.

This is how you can imagine a BiciBus:

In our example, 11 children (colored) are guided, accompanied and shielded from moving traffic by 5 adults. On the one hand from oncoming traffic (green car), but also from following cars (like the red one); they can overtake only if the left or oncoming lane kis completely free. (sketch T.Willner)

FAQs

  • From what number of participants is a BiciBus possible?

With 16 cyclists or more, the BiciBus forms a so-called association according to the German traffic regulations (StVO § 27), which is to be regarded as a connected vehicle (similar to a truck with a trailer). This means that children under the age of 8 can also ride their bikes on the BiciBus.

  • Is there a participant limit for the BiciBus?

In principle, the StVO does not limit the number of participants. However, the respective association size should be individually adapted to the respective traffic or road situation. In the case of a large number of participants, it may be necessary to split the association into several groups (of at least 16 drivers each).

  • How many adult participants should accompany the BiciBus?

It should be ensured that the BiciBus is accompanied by a sufficient number of adult participants. An adult should lead and lock the BiciBus. This also makes it easier for traffic or the police to recognize the boundaries (beginning and end) of the BiciBus. The additional number of adult or young people accompanying you should be chosen in relation to the age and driving ability of the children cycling with you.

  • Are the children insured on the BiciBus?

The statutory insurance protection for the way to daycare, school or university also applies if you take part in the BiciBus. The same applies to the trade association's accident insurance cover for commuters.

  • What driving skills should the participants have?

The most important riding technique requirement is the ability of the participants to ride their bikes straight and safely in a group without bumps and corners. It is advisable to ask parents and children about this ability. In the event that this is not yet the case, appropriate training (e.g. in the form of riding on a bicycle course) in the schoolyard or similar place is an option. On this occasion, the bicycles could also be checked for functional and road safety.
